Mental Health: Disclosure in the Workplace

It’s Mental Health Awareness month, and this week we’re talking to Andy Dunn, author, Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind and Teri Latter, ​State Program Director, NAMI Illinois. Andy told us his incredible story of founding clothing company Bonobos while struggling with Bipolar I disorder, and Teri and Andy discussed best practices for employers to destigmatize mental health conversations at work.

Andy Dunn

Angel Investor, Red Swan

Andy Dunn co-founded the e-commerce-driven menswear brand Bonobos in 2007 and served as CEO through its 2017 acquisition by Walmart. As an angel investor and through his venture capital firm, Red Swan, Dunn has backed more than 200 startups, including Warby Parker, Dia & Co, and Coinbase. Dunn serves on the boards of Monica + Andy, an organic baby-apparel company founded by his sister, and the tech nonprofit RaisedBy.Us. Named to Fortune’s 40 Under 40 list in 2018, he is a graduate of Northwestern University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He lives in Chicago with his wife and their son.

Teri Latter

Program Director, NAMI Illinois State

Teri Latter’s passion for mental health began when her 19-year old son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and she vowed to do everything in her power to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness. Two years later, she became a Family Education Leader for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. After six years of volunteering as a leader in numerous NAMI programs, she assumed the role of NAMI Illinois State Program Director in 2018. She is responsible for training, delivery, and development of NAMI peer and family programs in Illinois. She is also on the Board of Directors of NAMI Barrington Area.

Teri spent 27 years at AT&T, primarily concentrating in Marketing and Product Development. After leaving AT&T, she worked for a boutique marketing company where she was the Director of Program Management.

Teri received an Executive Development Certificate through the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and is also a Certified Professional Coach.
